Ytterbium (atomic number 70) is a chemical element.
Ytterbium is one the 14 rare earth metals ( precious metals )


•Ytterbium is a silvery- white metallic rare-earth metal.
•The name Ytterbium comes from the Swedish village, Ytterby near Stockholm. Three other elements are also named after the Ytterby they are erbium, terbium and yttrium.
• Ytterbium has few uses. It is alloyed with stainless steel to improve some mechanical properties.
• Ytterbium fiber laser amplifiers are used in marking and engraving.
•Used as a doping agent in fiber optic cable.
•One of the lanthanides
•it is fairly stable in air but is readily attacked dissolved by dilute and concentrated mineral acids and reacts slowly with water.
•One of ytterbium's isotopes is being considered as a radiation source for portable X-ray machines.
•Isolation of the rare earth elements from each other has been difficult and expensive because their chemical properties are so similar.
